This week we wrote creative writing stories. Today we are editing and writing our good copies, which are due Monday, May 13th.
We are starting a new creative unit task design on Monday, May 13th (which is why all creative writing stories completed this week are due that day - no further class time will be given for these ones. They are welcome to come in at lunch to complete it on Monday if necessary). We have started a creative writing unit. I am planning on taking 2 weeks for this (this week and next) and write 2 whole stories! We will be doing mini-lessons in between the writing classes to enhance our stories. This creative writing unit will lead right into our persuasive writing unit.
We have started the unit off by brainstorming why a story is bad and why a story is good. We've also discussed story elements and why it's essential to have all 6 in a story. History projects are due on Friday. We are starting to PRESENT on Friday - so all parts must be complete. We have double classes of humanities all week (plus homework if you feel you need it) to be completed before Friday. This Friday May 3rd.
We have started a history project about a historical Canadian figure. This project is either an INDEPENDENT project or a group of TWO (maximum). In the past, groups of 3+ have not worked out, which is why it is strictly 2 or 1. I have attached all the documents you will need to complete the project below. There is a list of people you can choose from. You can also choose a person that is not on this list, however if you are unsure of who to pick, please reference the list. There is opportunity for choice, creativity and writing involved. This is a fairly work intensive project, so I encourage students to NOT work with friends, as they typically do not stay on task. You are welcome to work with friends, however it is your responsibility to manage your time wisely. I will be here to guide you and help you as much as you need, especially to independent workers. Below are all the documents you will need to complete the project. PLEASE REFERENCE THEM!
For the 5B students that are missing work, you need to do #2 or #3 (depending on what you are missing - in some cases, students are missing both). In the case of the pirate map, I've asked the students to label all provinces in the Atlantic Region (5 total).
Today we learned about the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Region, which talked about the Great Migration to Canada. This leads into our next humanities project - the Immigration Project! This project is due on Friday, March 15th!
To help you with point of view of your story, I have inserted a video about point of view. This classic tale "The Three Little Pigs" is told from the point of view from the wolf. In your narrative, you are taking on the point of view of someone in your family who is traveling to Canada. We started learning about the 6 different regions in Canada - the Atlantic Region, The Great Lakes and Hudson Bay Lowlands Region, the Canadian Shield, the Interior Plains, the Cordillera and the Arctic. So far, we have only learned about the Atlantic region and have completed 2 activities - a pirate map and a travel brochure. If you are not finished these activities - they are due on Monday, March 4th. We will be continuing on with the other regions next week.
We will be having our FIRST humanities quiz on Wednesday, February 13th on Canada's provinces and territories, as well as their capitals. Yes spelling counts, as well as starting EACH name with a capital letter (they are names after all)!
Below are the files needed to complete the railway project. Everything is there from Part A - Letter to Sir John A Macdonald to Part C - Calculating the Budget. Letter due: January 15th Map & Measurements due - Friday Jan. 18th Budget due - Tuesday Jan 22nd
